The Naja symbol which is an upside down crescent moon shape has a unique and interesting history.The Naja widely used by several Southwest American Indian tribes as a decorative ornament most commonly used in jewelry. The Naja meaning " crescent " in Navajo is often used in conjunction with the squash blossom necklace, with the Naja being the centerpiece. Before being adopted in the Americas as an ornament the upside down crescent was found among the Moors especially as a decorative element on horse bridles, which were likely believed to provide protection for the horse and rider from the evil eye, from there it was adopted by the Spaniards before making its way to the Americas. The upside down crescent was also used among the Phonenicians and probably others.
